I made this illustration for the cover of ChiquiOcio Magazine (in Spanish). I wanted to share my work process. I hope someone finds it interesting!
This is a magazine about family fun, so for the cover I needed to find something that kids and adults would like. Since the issue was for December to February, the theme had to be wintery but not specifically christmassy.
The first thing I thought was: bears! Then I thought about more things, of course, but when I took the pencil and started drawing, the paper seemed to be full of bears. In my first sketches I liked the idea of the cave and the relationship between inside/outside, so I decided to work with it further.
Next step was to print the sketches on A5-sized paper
(I try to use the same size as the final printed product whenever possible). My sketches are usually pretty tiny and I prefer copying them instead of drawing them over again because I end up changing the proportions and the composition stops working.
I didn't know which scene I was going to paint, so I decided to copy each element of the image on a different paper (I used tracing paper). That way I could scan them and easily play with them on the computer.
I used PhotoShop to make some drafts of the cover and I sent them over to the magazine people. Their favorite was the girl sleeping with the bear (funny, that was the first image I sketched!).
To make the final illustration I traced the sketch onto a watercolor paper using a light table. I chose a cream colored paper to achieve a warmer image. I painted with my new acrylic inks, drew with color pencils and a Uni-Posca marker, and made monotypes with dry leaves. Finally I made the snow flakes using some stamps my sister bought for me. It was a lot of fun!
From here I want to thank Silvia, Hugo and Belén to count on me and give me so much freedom. It was a pleasure!
