Love in San Francisco

He preparado este pequeño video para enseñar como hice un collage para una invitación de boda. Ahora que la afortunada pareja está felizmente casada y disfrutando de su luna de miel (en Hawaii ni más ni menos), enseñaré pronto el diseño final.

I prepared this little video to show how I made a collage for a wedding invitation. Now that the lucky couple is happily married and on their honeymoon, I'll post the final design soon.

San Isidro Labrador

Hoy es (o ha sido, porque con esto de la diferencia horaria siempre voy con retraso) el día de San Isidro, el patrón de Madrid. Y como madrileña que soy, he decidido hacerle este pequeño homenaje inspirado en una canción tradicional que hace poco me recitó mi abuela:

San Isidro Labrador,

metidito en un cajón,

el cajón era de pino,

metidito en un pepino,

el pepino era de cuarta,

metidito en una albarca,

la albarca se rompió

y San Isidro se escapó.

Por cierto, buscando en internet he encontrado otras versiones, como las que recoje Pep Bruno aquí y en la Fundación Jimenez Díaz aquí. (Qué folclórica me siento, debo ser el orgullo de mis padres ahora mismo.)

Today Madrid is celebrating the day of San Isidore the Laborer. To join the celebrations, even if it's here in the distance, I illustrated a traditional song that my grandma sang to me.

I'm not going to bother translating the song because it won't make any sense (actually, it doesn't make sense in Spanish either, but at least it rhymes!).

I miss you, Madrid!

Blue Garden

La primavera por aquí está haciendo maravillas. Hay flores por todas partes, las calles de la ciudad se han llenado de color, y el tiempo es tan agradable que se hace difícil quedarse en casa.

Para celebrarlo, he cedido a la tentación y me he regalado algo... Que voy a decir yo, ¡me encanta mi nueva funda de móvil!

El dibujo original está hecho con acuarela líquida, lápices y collage sobre papel. Podéis encontrar las fundas de iPhone e impresiones en mi tienda de Society6.

Everything is blossoming around here. The city streets don't look grey and muted anymore, and the weather is so nice lately that it's hard to stay indoors.

To celebrate it, I bought myself a present... What can I say, I love my new phone cover!

The original copy was made with liquid watercolors, pencil and collage. You can find iPhone covers and giclee prints in my Society6 shop.

Settling in

Hola, ¿hay alguien ahí?

Lo sé, apenas he pasado por aquí en estos últimos meses.... pero parece que las cosas por fin se van tranquilizando. Poco a poco me voy adaptando a mi nueva ciudad, nueva casa y nuevo trabajo (doy algunas clases en la Academia de Ciencias de California, así que pásate si vienes a San Francisco ¡y me verás rodeada de niños!, además: hay pingüinos).

Ahora que vuelvo a tener una rutina, prometo escribir más a menudo. ¡Tengo un montón de cosas que enseñar!

Hello, is anyone still reading this? 

I know I haven't posted much these last few months, but things are finally winding down. Little by little, I've been settling into my new city, new house and new job (I'm doing some teaching at the California Academy of Science, so come by if you are in SF to see me surrounded by toddlers!).

Now that I have a routine again, I'll be back around here more often. Actually, I have a ton of things to show!

Este fin de semana fui a esquiar por primera vez. Muy divertido, pero he perdido la cuenta de todas las veces que me caí. Auch, me duele todo el cuerpo.

Last weekend I went skiing for the first time. It was fun, but I've lost track of how many times I fell. Ouch, my whole body hurts.

Sketching Photographs

Cuando me siento a trabajar y nada sale como debería, me obligo a parar y a bocetar unas cuantas fotografías. Para mi, dibujar lo que mis ojos ven (en lugar de lo que piensa mi mente) es liberador. Sin presiones. Sin necesidad de ser particularmente creativa. Sin necesidad de hacerlo bien.

Hay unos cuantos sitios a los que siempre acudo para encontrar algo interesante que dibujar (o cuando tengo que buscar referencias): Shorpy, Everyday I Show Journal, Flickr (especialmente la galería de imágenes de Boston Public Library), y Vintage Everyday. Además uso Pinterest, pero no para buscar imágenes (porque me molesta que la mayoría de usuarios no citen a los autores) sino para recopilar y organizar mis favoritas.

(Que ganas de comprarme un buen escaner... pero hasta que lo consigo, ¡espero que no os importe que suba un par de fotos hechas con el móvil!)

When I sit at my desk and nothing comes out right, I force myself to stop and sketch some photographs. Drawing what my eyes see (instead of what my mind thinks) is pretty relaxing. No pressure. No need to be creative. No need to do it right.

There are a couple of sites I like to visit when I try to find something interesting to draw: Shorpy, the Everyday I Show Journal, Flickr (especially the image gallery of the Boston Public Library), and Vintage Everyday Blog. I also use Pinterest to keep track of my favorites and organize them (but not to look for images, because it bothers me that so many users don't give proper credits).

(I really can't wait to get a good scanner... in the meantime, I'm going to have to make it work with a couple of Instagram photos!)

Soy una chica con suerte. Sé que puedo contar con mi familia y amigos, siempre están ahí si tengo un mal día. Pero a veces eso no es suficiente... cuando haces algo creativo y lo compartes públicamente, lo que opinen los demás (te guste o no) se convierte en algo importante. Por eso me gustaría decir:

Gracias, Desconocido.
No nos conocemos, pero tus comentarios, tus emails y tu apoyo significan mucho para mi. Eres capaz arrancarle una sonrisa a un día gris.

P.D.: Realmente hice este dibujo para un desconocido... Se lo mandé a  p.strange cuando ganó este sorteo.

I'm a lucky girl. I know I can count on my friends and family, they are always there if I have a bad day. But sometimes that's not enough... when you do something creative and put it out in the world, other people's opinions matter. And that's why I want to say:

On clear days it's hard not to love this city.

Who am I?

Esa soy yo. La niña que cotillea el libro de su hermana y lee su propio libro del revés (ups!).

Me llamo Diana, tengo el pelo corto y rizado, y esta será la única vez que me veréis sin gafas.

Nací en Madrid, y allí vive la mayor parte de mi familia. Yo vivo a 9.313 kilómetros de distancia, en una casa centenaria en San Francisco (en serio, tiene 100 años).

Mi marido es un amor y un magnífico cocinero (por suerte, porque yo odio cocinar).

Siempre me gustó leer y dibujar.

No sé conducir ni montar en bici.

No me gustan demasiado los dulces (sí, eso incluye helados).

Y estas son algunas cosas que de verdad me gustan: paseos largos, faros, lugares lejanos, niños, libros, museos, cucharitas, música.

¿Y porqué cuento todo esto?

Porque hoy fue un día especial para mi... Fue mi cumpleaños.

Normalmente no lo celebro. Lo cierto es que normalmente ni si quiera me gusta. Pero este año decidí tres cosas: que lo disfrutaría, que me tomaría el día libre, y que os contaría algo sobre mi.

My name is Diana, but it's pronounced Deanna because I'm from Spain (that's why I have a funny accent). 

I have short, curly hair, and this will be the only time you'll see me without my glasses. 

I was born in Madrid, and most of my family lives there. I live 5,787 miles away from them in a hundred year-old house in San Francisco. 

My husband is an awesome guy and a great cook (which is pretty lucky because I hate cooking).

I've always liked reading and drawing. 

I can't ride a bike or drive a car. 

I don't really like sweets (yes, that includes ice-cream).

And here are some things I really like: long walks, lighthouses, places far away, kids, books, museums, little spoons, music.

Do you know why I'm telling you all this? 
Because today was an special day for me.... It was my birthday. 
I don't usually celebrate it. Actually, I don't really like it. But this year I decided three things: I was going to enjoy it, take the day off, and tell you a little bit about me.
